Film Review 161 – Anyone But You

Watched: 2nd March 2024

Rating: 2.5/5 stars

Sometimes films are just meant to be okay. And that in itself is okay! There is nothing new or special about Anyone But You, a romcom that feels like it has clawed its way out of the bricked-up catacombs of mid-to-late 2000s history to stand tall and defiant in this the year of our Lord 2023. But it has its funny moments, especially as it goes on, and the natural, unlearned chemistry between Sydney Sweeney – magnetic, by the way – and Glen Powell is quite cute to watch. It took me longer to admit than I want to before I realised it was a Shakespeare derivative, but once I did, it made me slightly more ready to forgive the weird thing it would do with the intertitles every so often.
